Harry Knopf is the General Manager at High Knowledge GmbH, a data centre services and consultancy provider that became an official Interact partner for Germany in 2021. We caught up with Harry to hear his views on sustainability as well as their future predictions for the data centre industry. What’s your background, and how did you end up in the data centre industry?

As an accredited data centre planner and with more than 20 years of professional experience in leading positions within the IT industry, among others at General Electric, Kyocera, Eaton and as managing director and partner of the planning and consulting company High Knowledge GmbH, I have become familiar with various aspects of IT and IT infrastructure. A holistic view is not new to me and is also what makes it so appealing.

What’s one thing you personally are passionate about in the sector?

Unfortunately, innovations and sustainability are all too often more appearance than reality or no more than lip service. In the end, the focus is on protecting existing investments and the current business case. Yet today, with clever approaches, both ecological and economic success can be achieved.

How did your company get started?

From the idea of planning and building truly sustainable data centres, taking all disciplines into account. This requires a new look at the challenges of the coming years. We need to come up with new solutions, which is exactly what we are doing very successfully.

Why did you choose Interact as one of your services; how does it fit in with your company’s ethos?

Interact and High Knowledge are both centrally concerned with sustainability. For us, Interact's solution is the ideal building block for our portfolio to take a central look at IT alongside infrastructure and develop AI-based sustainable concepts quickly and easily.

How do you see the sector evolving in the next 10 years?

Climate-neutral data centres will become the standard. The awareness of the digital footprint will increase significantly and with it the impact on companies and their digital services and offerings.

If you could change one thing in the sector today, what would you change?

More action and fewer announcements. All the tools are already available to us today.

Was ist dein Hintergrund, und wie bist du in der Rechenzentrumsbranche gelandet?

Als akkreditierter Rechenzentrumsplaner und mit mehr als 20 Jahren Berufserfahrung in leitenden Funktionen in der IT-Branche, unter anderem bei General Electric, Kyocera, Eaton und als Geschäftsführer und Partner des Planungs- und Beratungsunternehmens High Knowledge GmbH habe ich verschiedene Aspekte von IT und IT-Infrastruktur kennengelernt. Dabei ist ein ganzheitlicher Blick für mich nicht neu und macht für mich zudem den Reiz aus.

Was ist eine Angelegenheit, die dir in der Branche besonders am Herzen liegt?

Innovationen und Nachhaltigkeit sind leider allzu häufig mehr Schein als Sein oder nicht mehr als Lippenbekenntnisse. Am Ende stehen der Schutz bestehender Investitionen und der aktuelle Business Case im Vordergrund. Dabei lässt sich heute mit klugen Ansätzen beides erreichen, ökologischer und ökonomischer Erfolg.

Wie wurde dein Unternehmen gegründet?

Aus der Idee heraus, wirklich nachhaltige Rechenzentren zu planen und zu bauen und dabei alle Disziplinen zu berücksichtigen. Hierbei ist ein neuer Blick auf die Herausforderungen der nächsten Jahre notwendig. Wir müssen zu neuen Lösungen kommen, genau das ist es, was wir sehr erfolgreich tun.

Warum hast du dich für Interact als eine deiner Dienstleistungen entschieden; wie passt es zum Ethos deines Unternehmens?

Interact und High Knowledge beschäftigen sich beide zentral mit dem Thema Nachhaltigkeit. Die Lösung von Interact ist für uns der ideale Baustein für unser Portfolio, um neben der Infrastruktur auch die IT zentral in den Blick zu nehmen und KI-basiert schnell und einfach nachhaltige Konzepte zu entwickeln.

Wie wird sich die Branche aus deiner Sicht in den nächsten 10 Jahren entwickeln?

Klimaneutrale Rechenzentren werden der Standard. Das Bewusstsein für den digitalen Fussabdruck wird signifikant steigen und damit auch die Auswirkungen auf Unternehmen und deren digitale Leistungen und Angebote.

Wenn du heute eine Veränderung in der Branche vornehmen könntest, was würdest du ändern?

Mehr Taten und weniger Ankündigungen. Alle Mittel stehen uns heute schon zur Verfügung.
